Project brief: The NHS was rolling out a training programme across England for A&E doctors. It needed a ‘toolkit’ to advise trusts on the practical steps to implement it.

Interviews: A pilot programme was running at the Royal Derby Hospital to train A&E doctors to consultant level. I interviewed the clinicians behind the programme to find out why they started it and what benefits were being seen in emergency departments as a result.
A methodical approach: I structured the content into the practical steps that all trusts would need to take to replicate the programme. Then I drafted the implementation toolkit in close collaboration with the doctors I had interviewed.
Writing and editing: The content was written in an agile way so it could be easily reshaped if and when early ideas shifted. I allowed two rounds of editing to ensure the messaging was exactly right, then worked with a designer to produce the final piece.
